After a titanic battle of phone tag, between myself, FedEx, customs agents and the customs officials, I now am in possession of the parts I need to repair the bike. After 5 weeks in Mendoza, it is a major relief to now be in a position to start the repair.
I have had one of the side boxes hammered back in to shape and the rear of the frame straightened, so now its a matter of getting all the new parts on and taking care of some small service work which was the reason that I was coming here in the first place.
This has come as a huge relief to me , as I had already looked in to the option of getting the parts shipped to Santiago, in Chile, where there are not such draconian import restrictions. This would then have left me with two options, which were to smuggle the parts back in to Argentina or truck the bike over there. Neither option was great, but would have had to be explored if all else failed.
Thankfully that is no longer the case and with luck and some handy work, I should be on the road again by the weekend of 7th Feb. At last!
Last night I went to see the latest Guy Richie film, Rock and Roller, which I really enjoyed and all the London accents brought home a twinge of nostalgia, also reminding me of all the dodgy characters I used to meet when owning the bike shop, God I did deal with some slippery bastards, I almost miss it. Tonight there is a big BBQ at the hostel and I am to prepare all the salads, the Argies can cook a piece of meat, but look at a vegetable like it has just arrived from Mars.
Next post should hopefully be from somewhere other than Mendoza.
Ciao for now, Stuart.
